Dear Toby
I have such strong confidence that whatever may happen tomorrow, this will
be my best marathon ever!!
This will be my 21st marathon. But, I have never trained this hard and
never focused this much, and never been this eager to run faster.
Thank you for making 2003 NYC so special to me.
Your cheers have always erased my doubt, worry and pressure.
You changed my whole attitude toward running!!!
….Appreciating my good fortune that I met you.

Hi Toby,
I just wanted to thank you for all your support and inspiring words. Speedwork has been a lot of fun and hard work and I've had a great time being in your class the past couple of months. Thank you for pushing us to go a little farther, and yes....thank you for making us do drill work!!! It seems strange how everything has come to a hault and we have arrived at this moment. Finally, I am ready to run NYC again. See you at Tony's!

Thanks Toby. You've been an inspiration to my running for the last 6 months and I am SO ready to get out there and give it my all. I've come a long way in your class and feel really confident that I'll be able to break 4 hours this year. Thanks for the endless advice, motivation and support. You're a great coach Toby. I will be at the Expo on Thursday and will definitely stop by to see you.

Thank you for your nice words of encouragement. Also, thank you for an
excellent training season. I thoroughly enjoyed the winter, spring and
summer
sessions in that I had a lot of fun and have really improved my running
program. I am looking forward to a fun, thrilling and challenging
morning/early afternoon this Sunday.

Thanks for the training. I now understand why people say "getting there is

Toby,
Since I can not attend the last track session tomorrow night due to a
work conflict and a nagging foot injury, I wanted to thank you for your
excellent workouts and advice as they were the most rewarding running
experiences I've had in a long time. They have renewed my interest in
trying to improve my running form and I have met some great people to
train with as well. Hopefully I will be healed enough to run New York
and I look forward to attending your workouts through the winter.
Thanks,

Hey Toby;
I just got back from Chicago and I am very happy to 'report' that I ran my best marathon
'ever'...:):)....I am so thrilled, as I never 'ever' believed that I could run a 3 hour 11 marathon....
my best marathon was in 1994 (!!!) with 3:14 and I was not able to get anywhere close
to that time ever since....hence, I am really thrilled and I would like to thank you for your help....
it is truly great to have you as our new coach!!! It feel 'so good' to run a PR at age of
(almost) 44....:):)
Ciao,

Toby,
I just want to thank you for your encouragement to run the marathon. I attended one of the NYRR clinics that you spoke at in September. I hung around after the session to run my "under trained" story by you. If you hadn't given me hope, I would never have endeavored. It just so happens, that I ran my PR yesterday! Thank you again!

Thanks Toby
I was looking forward to chasing the pack tonight. I am feeling a bit faster and lighter these days, making progress but slowly.
One way I can tell is I have been doing one 8 mile run in Central Park each Tuesday. I warm up / jog up to the Engineer's Gate at 90th, then start my watch and run the 6 mile loop, quick but not sprinting or dying. Just a good effort -- that's when I saw you on Tues.
Five weeks ago I did it in 50 minutes. The last three times I've done in the last four weeks have been 46:00, 44:55 and 44:44 (the best I've done this year). I used to run 7:20's so easily, now it is a big accomplishment. But the point is I am running better with less effort, THANKS TO YOU.

Toby,
All I have to say is: "Thank You!". I ran the Yonkers 1/2 marathon
yesterday in 2 hours 8 minutes. I swear the whole time I was running
it, I
thought I set my watch late, then I get to the finish and I could not
believe the clock time. Still kind of feels like I dreamt it.
Yonkers
is a pretty hill race. My best 1/2 time prior to this was 2:23 and
that
was on a flatter course.
I definitely couldn't have done it without you. Your coaching on
Wednesday
nights has really made me push myself and achieve great goals.

Toby,
I have to hand it to you – you put me in the best shape of my life. Today’s run was among the best training runs I’ve ever done. I ran clear across the county from my home to that of my parents, according to my GPS watch (which I think is accurate +/- .5 miles) did 23 even in 3:05:58 (8:05 miles) and was WELL WITHIN MYSELF. I could absolutely have done 3 more, probably in under 24 minutes.
Looking at my log, with your guidance I am absolutely blowing away every statistic I’ve kept over 13 years – I’ve run 40+ for 6 consecutive weeks, most years it seems I barely have one or two weeks over 40 miles.
Anyway, I was really thrilled with how things went today. Unfortunately I had an event in the city and did not have time for a nap but I’ll try to get a good night’s sleep tonight. I see you have 8 more for me tomorrow and cannot do them in the evening (as I usually like on Mondays) so we’ll have to hope my body’s up to it in the AM.
Thanks again, and I’ll keep you posted!

Hi!
I really liked our workout last week! Your plan was pretty effective, I thought. Also, I thought it was a good idea to have only 2 groups instead of three; that encouraged us to rethink our positions, and I believe that some of us may have been able to break out of our mental/physical "sameness."
Thanks,

Ran the Long Training run with the 7:15 group, oops, I mean the 7:30 group. I felt great. I kept waiting for my body to break down and it never did.......definitely could have kept going. I wasn't sore and limping around after like prior years. I ever did lots of work around the house after, going up and down stairs. I was amazed. Speed training must have other benefits than just running faster. See you Wednesday.

Hi Toby: I finished my half ironman in 5 hours 24 minutes, smashing last year’s time of 5.54. The bike course was a little flatter and faster, but what really made the difference was my run: after 4 hours of swimming and biking I still managed a half marathon at 8.50 pace (vs. 10 min pace last year). Actually I could have pushed harder, but I didn’t want to lengthen my recovery time or re-injure myself for what is now my one and only athletic goal: the NYC MARATHON!!! VERY sore today (despite sitting in an ice bath for 20 mins). I’m going to take today off and restrict myself to a short easy run tomorrow, but will report for duty Wednesday… Thank you so much for everything you have done for me. I don’t deserve you. I read and finished your book the other night. This is one of the greatest books out there. It compares to the Boston book that Tom Derderian as far as quality. You really took your time and did your research, so I have to say great job on a lot of hard work bud. It's NYC and the Marathon in a nutshell, or should I say apple. I was reading your second edition book again, checking out the
back where it had that training schedule for the work people like
myself, that with Tanui's training looks great. Then I read on to
check
out what happened to you on that island. Not to get to sentimental on
you, but I never had a runner I looked up to, but now I have. I have
chosen you as the runner I idolize and look up to the most. The things
you have accomplished, and the things you have over come, it's amazing.
So, looks like I can say you're my hero per say. What's great, is that
your not across the seas, you're right in my back yard.

Toby,
Just a note to say thanks for a great season and for
being a great coach. You're expertise, motivation, and
confidence in your runners goes far beyond what I
think you realize. I'm as ready as I can be, and now
it's time to execute the plan.

Thank you for such a wonderful job on Saturday at the more clinic. The few that were on-site were very lucky to get the insight they got from you.
Your support of the event has been great and truly appreciated.

Dear Toby,
I was at the last lecture at the Road Runners about 10 days before the
marathon that you so kindly facilitated. My name is Jill Van Note. I was
one of a couple of women in the room who was running the full marathon and I
came up to you briefly to ask about pace groups and my goal to break 4 with
my last marathon being NYC last Fall in 4:14.
You looked straight into my eyes and said "You can do it. You have nothing
to lose, leave it all out on the course." I believed you and I knew I was
going to try.
Thank you for your encouragement, and for speaking so highly of the pace
teams.
So thank you Toby. I will never forget the look you gave me when you said
"You can do it".
I did it.
Best to you. Wishing you health, peace, and happy trails.

I have forgotten to thank you for the superb job you did for
Runner's World in Boston. Please accept my apologies,
but know that I was following all your work very closely, and
believe it was all first-rate.
Not only that, but you stepped up to the plate when we
really needed you. Matt, and I and everyone at Runner's World

Thanks again. Stay in touch. Maybe we can find other places
for you to shine.

Hi Toby,
You can not imagine, this morning I received 21 boxes of shoes, I
repeat again TWENTY ONE BOXES OF SHOES.!!
Yes, 21 boxes of shoes, I couldn't believe my eyes when the lady
showed
me the boxes, I thought she mixed up things. She told me that is true
usually the surface mail takes a long time to arrive to their
respective
destinations, but she also admit that this time it took even more
longer
than it suppose to be, due to some mishandling inside Postal authority!
She
humbly apologize for that.
So in total I received the total of 180 pairs of different sizes of
running shoes, there was also 20 pairs of T-shirts, some few used
socks,
shorts and skin tight.
Lastly, on behalf of myself, the whole entire society of Timmax
athletics Club and now shoes 4 Africa I would like to say THANK YOU TO
ALL
THOSE FRIENDS WHO DECIDED TO RUN WITH ONE PAIR OF SHOES BECAUSE THEY
DONATE
THE SECOND PAIR TO SUPPORT TO AFRICAN POOR ATHLETICS FAMILIES. IN
RETURN I
PROMISE THAT I WILL WORK HARD TO MAKE SURE THAT MORE CHAMPIONS WILL
COME
THROUGH SHOES 4 AFRICA. NO ONE MAY REALIZE NOW, BUT ONE DAY HISTORY
WILL
DO.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Last night in Philadelphia, I attended the LAST-MINUTE ING NEW YORK CITY
MARATHON TIPS presented by Toby Tanser. I wanted to thank the NYC
Marathon for conducting this activity. It was an awesome opportunity.
Although I am an experienced marathoner, I was able to get a couple of
tips that could help get me over the hump from being a 3:31 marathoner
to being a 3:30 marathoner.
I wish I would have had such an opportunity when I ran my first
marathon. I believe that Toby has gone a long way to eliminating much
of the anxiety that first timers generally experience.
Thanks again,

I cannot even begin to thank you for everything that you have done for me.
Sunday was incredible. I was solid as a rock. My first 10 miles and my second 10 miles were in the exact same time to the second. I stayed with the pacing team for just about 15 miles and then I began to push ever so slightly (and very controlled) ahead of them. I stayed focused until I crossed the finish line and then I let all of the emotions out in sort of a primal scream!
Once again I wanted to thank you for helping me achieve something that I desired so much, but seemed unachievable. I could not have done it without you.
Sincerely yours,
Jay Culotta Richard.Presutti@srz.com
Toby,
I didn't stop my watch so I don't have the exact time, but around 3:04. I am really happy! I started out a bit fast, then caught my pace around mile 5. I really have to thank you - you are the coach of the year, I could never have come this far this fast without you. Thanks for giving me the plan and the motivation. The marathon is all about proper training, and you gave me that times 10. Let's get together for lunch or coffee and I will give you all the details.

Toby,
Yesterday was an awesome day. After all those miles in CP, I got the opportunity to put in all on the line. A PR by 5 minutes......despite the heat.
My success is a function of 3 things:
1. My resolve to get it done
2. YOUR TRAINING...YOUR TRAINING!!
3. My friend Todd
Considering a began your program 20 pounds overweight and believed in what you were teaching had so much to do with my success. Thank you Toby for showing us how to get it done. I'll enjoy this feeling forever and now believe I can go under 3.
Thanks again Toby for helping me get it done.
