My name is Alice Nyaboke. I am 20 years old and I come from Makina village. I am a Kisii. I cleared my web designing and IT College last year. I went through 3 stages in which every stage people are eliminated. There are certain criteria in which they were using, but through the passion, determination, team spirit, socializing skills, and self-motivated interest that helped me to pursue the course in the 3 stages of elimination. As for now, I am just at home and I do not have anything to do. If I would be given a chance, I would like to further my studies and expose myself positively to the world.
I come from a family of 8. I have 3 brothers, 3 sisters, my father and mother. My sisters and I are the only ones who have furthered our education up to college level, through the help of Carolina for Kibera. My parents are both in Nairobi but they are not working. Even to pay house rent we always hustle from all the dimensions that are conducive for us to achieve the required necessity.
In my family, to get food, clothes, and the basic needs is a nightmare, but we are managing. In every little penny we get we distribute evenly so that we can cater for our basic needs.
I started playing football in 2002 when I was in class seven. Soccer has changed my life positively. First it has made me establish my academic achievements. Then, since soccer has been used to empower women, at least now I have self-esteem, confidence, self-motivation, I’m a team player, dynamic, goal-oriented, self-disciplined and I can work under minimum supervision.
At least these days we have a safe space for girls, where we teach them about reproduction and how they can be responsible women and be presentable in the future. I have qualified to be a peer-educator. I am glad because I have passion for working with the girls in Kibera and I am committed and determined to give back to the community, especially to the girls.
Through soccer I am a role model, peer-educator, I can facilitate in the field of play, I can council, advise, and give direction. I am proud to be in the soccer club because it has given me more good than harm in my life. Soccer has brightened my future because I have exposure to my fellow colleagues. I have changed people’s lives and I have made new friends from all the dimensions of the country – Kenya.
