Claris Akinya

I am Claris Akinyi, I was born on 25th July 1988 in Nairobi, in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. I am the fifth of the ten children, three boys and seven girls of Patricia and the late Francis.

My late father had been a cobbler in Kenyatta Market, a few miles from Kibera. Kenyatta Market wasn’t a flourishing market, so, we survived from hand to mouth and we could not make a step ahead in life.

I went through my primary education in a school for needy kids, Kicoshep. In school I got an opportunity to develop my skill in football, especially in goalkeeping. I did my eighth year in 2003 and got a pass. Good enough, I got support from AMREF in Italy and joined a secondary school in Kisumu, Sinyolo Girls High School. I did my fourth year examination in 2007 and got a pass, although, I didn’t manage to join the next level of education due to my law status.

I like being associated with soccer since am able to meet new friends and also learn more skills in life. Mostly, I like sharing ideas, playing football and visiting friends.

Being the only child who has got an opportunity to be in a class, I have to struggle so as to help my family make ends meet.
