Mary Florence Atieno

My names are Mary Florence Atieno, 22 years, from Katwekera Village in Kibera. I am Luo and have no job. Am the fifth born in a family of eight. Am an orphan and I live with my siblings. My life has been very hard ever since my parents passed away. I being a small child, my relative took me to stay with her but life there was not easy so I had to run away and look for my elder sister. She later found capital to support herself and came to look for all of us who were divided to live with our relatives after our parents’ death. She found my siblings and I and took us to stay with her at our parent’s house.

We went through difficulties like going to sleep without meals and I later dropped out of school in form three for lack of school fees. I stayed at home which I got a child in the long run. Being a single parent with no job and no food to feed my child, I started playing football as a career and that is where I was talented. Through football I have achieved a lot, built my talent and can now get food to feed my baby and something to our meals. From the support from coaches and fellow playmates I get advice and when there is a tournament we are invited to play. At the end of the day I get some cash to educate my baby. Through football I busy myself with training and get no time to idle around the village.
