Sorofine Akinyi Oyembo

My names are Sorofine Akinyi Oyembo. I was born on the 23rd of November in the year 1991. I come from a very poor family. In our family we are only two children, one girl and one boy. I am a half cast since my mum is a Kisii and my dad is a Luo. My mum is the breadwinner since my dad never cares about us. My parents are very poor since they cannot afford for our basic needs. My dad always goes out and comes in when he is very drunk and causes chaos in the house. We even sometimes spend our night outside for when he is drunk he doesn’t want to see anyone in the house. My mum has really played an important role of being a caring mother by trying to feed a little for us to feed on.

I joined primary at old Kibera primary school in the year 1998. I did my K.C.P.E. in the year 2006. I got 290 marks out of 500, which was quite promising for more improvement when I join secondary school. The sponsors who had sponsored me took me to a secondary school at St. Teresa’s Girls High School. I studied there for one year and one term since the sponsors withdrew paying for my fee. I was stranded since I had no other option or help. I continued praying, hoping to find someone who will come to my rescue. I was one day called by my referee, Abdul Hussein “Cantar”, to go to his office and have some discussions on matters concerning my studies. He asked me to go with him at Langata High School and try if we can get a chance. Due to my hardworking in academics and in football I was offered a chance without any delay. I joined form two and did my end term exams and proceeded to the next class.

My hobbies are playing football and also sometimes I like reading novels.

I really appreciated for being given the Provost Leadership Award. The money that I will be given I will use it in buying school stuff like uniforms, textbooks, and the stationeries that are needed for my academics. I am very glad for the support you have given me.
